In 2017 we started to create my idea of a modern liquor based on a classic Crème de Cacao Blanc. Together with the heads of DeKuyper, Mark de Witte and Albert de Heer, their Head of Research and Development: Henk-Jan Schouten and the talented and award-winning master distiller of RUTTE, Myriam Hendricks.

On the 9th of March 2020 I invited a small group of people, regulars of Le Lion and people who live and die for good cocktails, to a very small launch event. My wife Ingrid and me set up evenings called “Meyer’s Monday” from time to time.  So, always when it is time to call some good people of Hamburg and show them something special and new from the liquid adventures we, we call out a Meyer’s Monday.

This Meyer’s Monday, a little more than a year ago, it was time to shout out loud and proud “Ciao Cacao” and celebrate life and style. And team Le Lion and me, we had set up a ten drinks menu of great DUTCH CACAO drinks, which I am happy to share with you.

And somehow, I forgot to publish this list of ten great DUTCH CACAO drinks we served this night. Because a few days after we launched this special product I am so proud of, made for the best bars and bartenders who love good drinks, the hospitality all over Germany had to close down. And a few dark clouds came up the horizons. But, looking back at all the strange things that happen in the last years, DUTCH CACAO had become a constantly please of joy for me. On one side: just in a glass, pour on ice! Or mixed which gives awesome drinks and these days it is definitely time for a drink. Better two than one.

But also, it looks like the people, now had to drink and mix at home, really loves DUTCH CACAO - because it started to sell quite well in online shops and well-selected stores in the last years.

And therefore: bars a still closed, here is my list of ten way how Le Lion mix DUTCH CACAO

Also: if you are curious to try Dutch Cacao and live in Germany, my Webshop Trinkabenteuer.de offers the first 50 people a discount code of minus 5,00 Euro on one bottle of Dutch Cacao. Use the Code “FirstFifty” or use this link. And now: time for drinks

ok, let’s be honest here: This drink is a TOP five Star “PRO - f**king hell why I never had this before” drink. If done right. As we, at least I, know, Smashes can be tricky. I was searching my favourite Cocktail Websites for Crème de Cacao blanc drinks and Cocktailvirgin had this one hidden in the DATABASE. Chartreuse? Mint? Smash? IT IS AWESOME

GOLDEN AGE

GOLDEN AGE by Jim Meehan

A very good friend of mine, Jim Meehan, served this drink a few days ago to me. While we had a little Bank’s Rums Masterclass at Le Lion. It shows the profession of Jim. Knowing how to handle different Rums with different Ingredients. And another perfect example of why Golden Rum, here its Banks ,

THE CENTURY STYLES!

The Twentieth Century Cocktail is one of my favourite Cocktails and definitely one of the reasons, why I had the idea to recreate a modern take on a lost and forgotten ingredients Crème de cacao blanc. Creating the liquid and the bottle with the R&D Team of DeKuyper I had pictures of the breathtaking, classy and beautiful Art deco and classy train in front of my eyes. The Twentieth Century Cocktail was created in the roaring 20’s to celebrate this beautiful train.

And also: It is a perfect example of why Cacao and Lemon give an unusual and surprisingly taste combination my guest falling in love with.

With the Cocktail comeback in early 2000, when great women and men behind bars started to serve lost classics like the Twentieth Century Style again, they also started to twist them. Some but Basil in a Gin Smash, others changed the base Spirit in this Cacao Classic. And ended up in renaming the Twentieth Century Cocktail regarding the new based spirit they use. So, next to the classic Century Style we serve “Le Lion Style” we served the Ninetieth Century Cocktail with Bourbon and the Twenty-first Century Cocktail served with Tequila

DELMARVA No.2

DELMARVA No.2 Cocktail

If you love classic drinks. THE COCKTAIL CHRONICLES by Paul Clark is still one of the best places on the world wide web to look serious drinks up. There I found the DELMARVA Cocktail No.2. Here is a link to his article and the story and the whole pack. We focus here and now on a great American Rye Whisky based drink.

WHITE GRASSHOPPER

White Grasshopper with ACQUA BIANCA for an elegant mint taste

This “interpretation” of a classic Grasshopper has become one of my favourite new Dutch Cacao drinks. First: It is all about ACQUA BIANCA. The new Liquor, also a cooperation of DeKuyper and the Maestro Salvatore Calabrese. And this powerful citrus amber combination has also some serious hints of mint in it. And it gives the drink a totally fresh and new approach. Citrus Fruit, Mint, Cacao, Cream. Tastes awesome.

  • WHITE GRASSHOPPER
  • in Shaker
  • 30 ml Acqua Bianca
  • 30ml DUTCH CACAO
  • 30 ml Cream
  • shake, strain
  • Cocktail glass, Garnish with Mint Sprig

THE ALEXANDER STYLES

An Alexander is one of the great bar classics. If it just says “Alexander,” the base would be classic Gin. Brandy Alexander indeed calls for Brandy or Cognac

It might sound strange, that we call a Genever based Alexander “The Classic”. But we love the nutty and malty flavour this aged Old Simon Genever brings into this lovely drink. The Hazelnut Alexander is what we call Liquid Nutella. A good Hazelnut distillate, Dutch Cacao and Cream. One of the surprising drinks has become the Barbara. It shows again that good drinks are often not based on categories, but on brands. The Barbara is a classic Vodka Alexander from the Savoy cocktail book. But: When you choose to go for a very special “flavoured Vodka” The Douglas Fir made by the Juniper Masterminds of Hepple, you will find some delicate Douglas Fir notes in a dam tasty drink
